Waited until the afternoon as the forecasts were for Westerly winds and
high tide was 3.30, so I was expecting some cross shore fun with the wind
funneling through the gap. Arrived to find it was cross on with a huge
wind shadow from Burgh Island but went for it anyway.
Everybody seemed to be changing up to 4.7 so I went with the flow but opted
for the big waveboard to give me a fighting chance with the wind shadow.
First couple of runs were ok but I had to come back in to warm my hands
(avoid hot-aches), I went out back and the swell was massive - at least
mast high. After a short break I was able to stay on the water but it was
mainly runs out to the wind shadow getting some nice jumps of the 3-4 ft
beach break.
Decided to chance it out back again and blobbed out through the shadow to
be quite over powered on the other side. As I got opposite the river mouth
the waves were getting bigger and faster. I gybed off a big swell when I
judged I was past the white water and headed back. I got caught out by two
bit of chop bouncing together which got be airborne unexpectedly and landed
on my back. As I was water starting I heard this omenous rumble behind me
that signalled a wave breaking at mast high - it was like a building coming
at me and I felt that nervous pit of fear I last felt at Hookipa. Pumped
onto the plane and managed to stay one step ahead, the lads said it looked
big from the beach.
After that I decided to stay inside and played in the small stuff until the
wind died off. Good day but not quite 5 star.
